The production of jam and fruit preparations is water and energy-consuming. Therefore, efficient use is particularly important for us. For environmental and ecological motives, we are constantly working on measures to reduce the consumption of water, electricity and gas, as well as to minimise waste and wastewater. Our traditional spirit of innovation and strength helps to continually develop new solutions.
We have launched an internal energy management system, which searches for innovative ways of saving. In the view of rising energy prices, energy management offers the possibilities of making energy consumption more transparent, and of identifying saving potential. For example, waste heat from production is used by Zentis to heat its offices. The use of a CHP plant (combined heat and power) also contributes to the production of electrical and thermal energy. Our ideas relating to energy conservation are documented and evaluated. Depending on extent of the savings potential, these are implemented as soon as possible or recorded in a plan of action. The subsequent review phase of the implementations is carried out by means of a monitoring system. In May 2012, our commitment to energy management was awarded and documented for the first time with the ISO 50001: 2011 certificate, because energy efficiency is the key to our success. Thus energy costs are permanently kept at a low level, competitive advantages are secured, and at the same time contribute to a sustainable economy.
Our innovative logistics concept also belongs to our groundbreaking resource management. A separate subsidiary company, founded in 1998 in Aachen, has over 200 colleagues and operates a fleet of 80 vehicles, which specialise in temperature controlled transport. Our flexible transport concept guarantees that all products are delivered to the customer freshly and promptly.
With a multiplicity of measures like these we have succeeded company-wide in lowering specific CO2 emissions by approximately ten percent since 2005. At our headquarters in Aachen alone, thermal energy consumption was cut back by seven per cent.
We were also able to significantly reduce our fresh water consumption and waste water production. Thanks to innovative membrane technology, we save over 50,000 cubic metres of water per year. With this technology we are pioneers in the industry. This successful project was supported by the German Federal State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and publicised by the Effizienz-Agentur NRW as a Best Practice Example.
The progressive optimisation of our production chain in terms of environmental protection remains one of our main concerns.
